Why Luts Are Crucial

Whether you're a professional video editor or simply trying to create better videos, LUTs are the most effective method for achieving a cinematic look quickly.

Regardless of your skill level, time is money. Manually color grading each shot from scratch is time consuming, energy draining, and in most cases gets the same result as using a LUT.

The Power of Consistency

With more than 17 years of editing experience I can confidently say that utilizing LUTs for my color grading workflow was the best decision.

Manually adjusting color always led to inconsistent results when I compared my shots to each other.

With LUTs, the colors between different footage stays the same. This means all I have to adjust is my exposure along with a few other small tweaks to get a consistent look across my entire project.

How to Get the Best Results

These LUTs work best on footage that has been converted to Rec709. To do this, I recommend shooting in the flattest color profile (log) your camera can shoot.

Every major camera company that shoots log offers a free conversion LUT on their website. Download, install it, and color your footage to look as natural as possible.

Then apply the LUT you like and make any additional adjustments.
